Combating the Malicious Use of AI: October

Our mission is to ensure that general artificial intelligence benefits all of humanity. We advance this mission by deploying innovative technologies that help people solve difficult problems, while simultaneously building democratic AI based on common-sense rules to protect people from real harm.

Since we began publishing threat reports in February 2024 , we have combated and reported more than 40 networks that violated our policies. These include preventing authoritarian regimes from using AI to control their populations or coerce other countries, as well as preventing abuses such as fraud, malicious cyber activity, and covert influence operations.

In this report, we share case studies from the past quarter and how we detect and combat the malicious use of our models. We observed that threat actors continue to graft AI onto legacy attack scripts to speed up their operations, rather than leveraging our models to gain new attack capabilities. When we detect policy violations, we ban the relevant accounts and share relevant insights with partners as needed. Through public reporting, policy enforcement, and peer collaboration, we are committed to raising public awareness of abuse while strengthening protections for ordinary users. Our mission is to ensure that general artificial intelligence benefits all of humanity.
