Borrego takes over a Pelicans squad that has been plagued with injuries over the past two seasons, but boasts a promising core group of Trey Murphy, Derrick Queen and Jeremiah Fears. One of his first moves might involve former overall number one pick Zion Williamson, who is out with a hamstring injury and is rumored to be on the trading block.

Borrego joined the Pelicans coaching staff as an associate head coach in 2023. His head coaching debut for New Orleans will be Sunday, when the Pelicans host the Golden State Warriors.
