Hidden Gems: Fairy-Tale Small Towns Along the Great Lakes

When people talk about the Great Lakes, they often think of big cities like Chicago and Detroit, or the vast lakes themselves. But as a travel blogger who loves to dig into hidden gems, I’ve discovered that some of the most charming experiences are in the small towns scattered along the shores. These towns, with their picturesque harbors, historic buildings, and friendly locals, feel like something out of a fairy tale. Today, I’m sharing four of my favorite small towns along the Great Lakes that are worth adding to your travel list.
First up is Bayfield, Wisconsin, located on the northern tip of Wisconsin overlooking Lake Superior. With a population of just 600, Bayfield is a quiet and charming town known as the "Berry Capital of Wisconsin." The town’s downtown area is walkable, with cute boutiques, cafes, and art galleries. I visited in September, during the annual Applefest, and the town was filled with the sweet smell of apples. I drove the Fruit Loop, an unpaved road that winds through orchards and berry fields, stopping to pick apples and taste fresh apple cider. Bayfield is also the gateway to Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, a group of 22 islands with sandy beaches, sandstone cliffs, and sea caves. I took a ferry to Madeline Island, the largest of the Apostle Islands, and hiked the trails, enjoying the stunning views of Lake Superior.
Next is Beverly Shores, Indiana, a small town in the heart of Indiana Dunes National Park. What makes Beverly Shores unique is its collection of historic "Century of Progress" homes from the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair. These five homes, with their unique architectural styles, were moved to Beverly Shores in the 1930s and are now part of the national park. I hiked the Dune Ridge Trail, which offers views of the homes and the nearby Lake Michigan shoreline. The trail winds through wind-swept dunes, and the views of the lake are breathtaking. Beverly Shores is also a great spot for water activities; I rented a stand-up paddleboard and explored the calm waters of Lake Michigan, with the dunes towering in the background.
Mackinac Island, Michigan, is another fairy-tale town that feels like a step back in time. Located in Lake Huron, Mackinac Island is known for its horse-drawn carriages—no cars are allowed on the island. I arrived by ferry, and as soon as I stepped off the boat, I was greeted by the sound of horse hooves on the cobblestone streets. The island has a charming downtown area with historic buildings, fudge shops, and souvenir stores. I rented a bike and rode around the island, which is about 16 kilometers in circumference. Along the way, I passed Fort Mackinac, a historic fort built in 1780, and enjoyed stunning views of Lake Huron. For lunch, I tried the famous Mackinac Island fudge—rich, creamy, and absolutely delicious. In the evening, I stayed at the Grand Hotel, the world’s largest summer hotel, with its elegant architecture and beautiful gardens.
Last but not least is Grand Marais, Minnesota, which I briefly mentioned in my Highway 61 article, but it’s worth a deeper dive. This small artist colony is located on the North Shore of Lake Superior, with a population of around 1,300. Grand Marais has a vibrant art scene, with numerous galleries and studios showcasing the work of local artists. I visited the Johnson Heritage Post Art Gallery, which features exhibits on the history and culture of the North Shore. The town’s harbor is a popular spot for fishing and boating, and I watched local fishermen unload their catch of the day. Grand Marais is also a great base for outdoor activities, with nearby trails for hiking, skiing, and snowshoeing. I ended my day with a sunset walk along the harbor, watching the sky turn shades of pink and purple over Lake Superior.
These small towns along the Great Lakes offer a slower pace of life and a chance to connect with nature and local culture. They’re the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of big cities, and each one has its own unique charm. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing getaway or an adventure-filled trip, these fairy-tale towns are sure to enchant you.
